Understanding Level 2 Charging
All electric vehicles come standard from the dealer with a Level 1 "charger" that plugs into a standard household electrical outlet. They work just fine but are slow. A Nissan Leaf, for example, with the supplied Level 1 charger will charge at a rate of 4.5 miles per hour of charging. That's around 22 hours for a full charge from empty.
A Level 2 Charger supplies 240 volts of electricity at a much higher amperage and will cut charge times significantly. From 22 hours as mentioned above to about 8 hours for a completely discharged Nissan Leaf.
If you do a lot of driving, a Level 2 Charging Station is a must and will take away the distance fear that some EV drivers have when deciding whether to take the electric vehicle or the gas burner.
